Looking for some ways to give back this holiday season? Here are some ideas, centered around helping kids (since, well, that's our mission.) You are likely aware of the first two; the rest are organizations you may not have heard of before but are doing a LOT of good in their communities!
Giving Assistant
Check out givingassistant.org, which enables shoppers to donate cash back dollars from participating retailers. Support a cause you believe in!
Feeding America
Donate at www.feedingamerica.com to help feed one of the 17 million hungry kids in America.
Second Harvest Food Bank of OC
This Food Bank feeds over 500,000 hungry men, women, and kids in Southern California. https://www.feedoc.org/
The Life Time Foundation
Donate at www.ltfoundation.org and help them collaborate with our country’s school food professionals to keep highly-processed food out of meals, while increasing the amount of fresh and simply prepared foods.
The Illumination Foundation
The Illumination Foundation provides targeted, interdisciplinary services for the most vulnerable homeless adults and children in order to disrupt the cycle of homelessness.
It was the 2018 California Non-Profit of the Year.
Volunteer opportunities:
Decorate and Fill Stockings for Illumination Foundation Clients
Decorate and fill holiday stockings this holiday season! You can add thoughtful gifts and even personalize the stockings.
Holiday in a Box
Help Illumination Foundation spread holiday cheer at our Emergency Homes by donating a holiday decoration kit. Work with coworkers, friends, and family to collect items to donate!
Donations kindly requested by December 16. If you are interested, please contact Caroline Horstmann at chorstmann@ifhomeless.org
The Priority Center
The Priority Center is an organization that provides child abuse support. Each year, they host a Families Helping Families holiday drive, where compassionate donors fulfill the holiday wish lists of our children and families in crisis, creating an unforgettable holiday experience for all. It then culminates in a one-day holiday event where all of our families are given their gifts.
How to help:
- Volunteers to help execute on the day of the event, which is Saturday, December 12, this year.
- “Santas” to adopt our families. Each Santa is given a wish list to fulfill the holiday needs and wants of one of our families. Sign up here.
- Monetary donations accepted.

Project Hope Alliance
Help give kids at Project Hope Alliance a magical holiday season! Often times homelessness is a barrier to truly enjoying the wonderful things the holiday season has to offer. By putting together and decorating a stocking filled with holiday treats, you can make this season even more special for our kids! They will be given to youth experiencing homelessness ages 3 to 15.
Not local to Southern California? They also accept financial donations.
